For math, fourth grade students saw Mr. Seley and worked on basic facts and began cursive. Third grade students met with Mrs. Davis and read the book Zero, then exploring some numbers that are important to each of us.
We read a book called How I Spent My Summer Vacation and shared with other kids a fact and a fantasy about our own summers to see if we could guess which was the fact and which was the fantasy.
In writing, we began a newspaper article about an important event in our life, telling what we learned from the event. The teachers modeled some writing, and then students worked within their 3/4 buddies to plan their paragraph. Ask your child what life event he/she is writing about! Here's a student sample:
We also began our daily study of conventions (grammar, spelling, and other elements of language). We use a "DOL" activity (daily language). You will see this come home scored each week so your child can track his/her growth in these skills.
This afternoon, we did a teamwork activity as a team of 54 with both Mrs. Davis and Mr. Seley. We gave each group spaghetti noodles and marshmallows and encouraged them to use teamwork to design and build the tallest structure they could. Here are some photos:
See everyone tomorrow!
