Count On The Best Year and Happy Birthday, Ian!

Today's learning target was "I can be a friend."

Our theme today was "I can be a friend," which was central to all of our activities throughout the day.  We began to talk about ways we can be a friend to our classmates, like by valuing each other, valuing our education, valuing our environment, working hard, being nice, and having fun. These are the core beliefs of BCS (We value our 3 Es.) and the DS class motto.

We had a busy day today and did not follow our normal schedule. Tomorrow will be more of a normal day. We began the morning with a word search of all the kids’ names and the song Count On Me by Bruno Mars. Then, the kids heard about some of our classroom procedures and values and spent some time getting to know their buddies. We read a book called The Language of Friendship and talked about specific ways to make friends. We learned the boundaries for the playground and spent some recess time playing with our buddies.  Then we went to a Town Hall assembly with our principals. Each child decorated a nameplate for their locker which represents important things about him or her. We had lunch and recess and we grouped all of our new students to make sure they had a 4th grade helper to walk them to get their lunch and to sit and play with. After lunch, we went to Engineering Tech (Davis) or Art (Seley). In the afternoon, we listened to Three Little Birds and tried not to worry about a thing today! Then we got our new planners, wrote today's entry in them, and Mrs. Davis' class celebrated Ian's 9th birthday. The kids each went to a classroom for a special BCS group called Character Connections.  This is a group of students from all grades (3-8) who stay together for all their years at BCS to live out the BCS 3Es. Today we welcomed our new students and spoke about how BCS students ride the buses and behave on buses. Our students came back to us so we could finish up our first day together. Lastly, it was time for choice hour!!

Thank you for sharing your children with us. It is such a pleasure to work with them. BCS is a great place to be and that is thanks to our amazing community of parents, students, and staff. If we have not yet met you, we look forward to seeing you soon! Remember that you can email us any time with questions, comments, or to give us a “heads-up” about your child.

Today was very smooth and all of most kids seemed very comfortable, easygoing, and happy to be here. It is normal for our new students to feel new and a little uncertain, and for our returning students to be thrilled to be back and to take on leadership roles in our class family. Our first week centers around building familiarity with our classroom, our schedule, our classmates, and our lockers. After a week or two, all the kids really do feel like seasoned pros! Today, the 3rd and 4th grade buddies at the tables were full of energy and conversation, so the kids are off to a great start becoming learning buddies.

We are looking forward to an amazing day tomorrow!!!

See you,
Kim and Tom
