Thursday

Hi Folks!
Today was another great day in rooms 101 and 103. In writing, we worked on making plans to achieve our resolutions. This week's theme in writing is "vague vs specific." For example, yesterday some kids wrote, "Watch less TV" or "Score more goals in soccer." We talked about how those were great goals but probably too vague to track. The revisions today focused on making their targets more specific.

Because it was too cold to go outside, we played board games at indoor recess. The kids did a great job of playing games like Monopoly and Scrabble. If you get a chance, play some board games at home with your kids!

In social studies, the kids continued to learn about Native Americans in Michigan. We learned that the Huron tribe lived in this area, but many other tribes lived in different locations around Michigan.

Stay Warm!

Homework:
4th: "Rounding Worksheet" due tomorrow. Kids needed some more review of the 3rd grade skill of rounding so we spent today revisiting this important concept. We now estimate that the Unit 3 test is next Thursday.

3rd grade math: pg 156.

Please turn in permission slips for the food waste program by 1/11.

JOIN THE “NO FOOD WASTE” CHALLENGE
Join us in this innovative service learning challenge!
Wasted food is a social problem! In 2013, 14.3 percent of U.S. households were food insecure at some time during the year. That is 48 million Americans, of which 16 million are children, living in food insecure households. Wholesome, nutritious food should feed people, not landfills. Food waste is a major problem that touches issues of sustainability, food security, and public health. We know that 40% of our food goes to waste and the majority of food is wasted at the consumer level - at grocery stores, at restaurants and in homes. We have a huge opportunity to educate our BCS community and build better habits that will lead to reducing food waste. Starting January 16, 2018, BCS will be partnering with Foodstand, a sustainable eating behavior change program that provides an education and challenge experience via their mobile platform. The app provides daily education, tracking, one-on-one support, team and challenge set up, and reporting to help measure the impact of the initiative. The program supports our curriculum goals at BCS and will help us live into our 3E’s (education, environment, each other). Please read the parent information letter and, if you would like your child to participate, print and complete the consent form returning it to your child’s homeroom/academic lab teacher no later than Thursday, Jan. 11, 2018 (complete one form for each child participating).  For those who want to join in on the challenge, a voluntary workshop will be provided on Tuesday, 1/16/18 at 6:30 PM in the BCS media center (also on BCS Facebook Live).
