Working Hard Wednesday

I A recap of day 17  of learning together...

Our schedule:

Our learning targets for all students:

Our day in review:

Third graders will be bringing home their math books to show their parents. We are beginning our year with multiplication. We are learning conceptually what multiplication is and how to represent it in variety of ways. Today we learned the strategy for x5: count by 5s and use your fingers to track how many groups you're counting. We have done lesson 1-1 and part of lesson 1-2. Look at the page after the glossary to see three diagrams that can be used to show what multiplication is. Also, we will be using some quick oral quizzes each day, both in class and at home, to practice our facts. Look at page 15, which is the log sheet. Kids marked the two boxes they need to do tonight: 5s count by partner and 5s multiplication partner. Page 17 is the sheet with the oral quizzes on it. Please note that we will also have a homework book, but I only introduce one resource at a time to keep it simple and clear for everyone! I let the kids know that they may ALWAYS do more practice than is assigned and that kids who work more learn more. In future days, we will bring home flashcards and logins to www.xtramath.org :) Gaining conceptual knowledge of multiplication and division, as well as building some fluency with facts, are the main goals of the first two units. A good resource to explore is http://bcs34.wikis.birmingham.k12.mi.us/Practice+Basic+Facts

Fourth graders explored multi-digit addition. We reviewed the traditional method and partial sums. We also discussed tips for doing these multi-digit operations. Students who did not finish 1.7 in class must complete it at home tonight for homework.

We took the NWEA reading test today; not all kids finished. We spent the other time today reading, writing, or learning about Michigan.

We will continue NWEA tomorrow and Friday. :)
