Resources for measurement are in Compass Learning (two assignments should be in your math portfolio there when you logs in) and at http://www.commoncoresheets.com/SortedByGrade.php?Sorted=3rd#s4 . (Please note that we are not doing the geometric pieces of the Measurement and Data in this unit!)
Measurement and Data Learning Standards
3.md.1 :Tell and write
time to the nearest minute and measure time intervals in minutes. Solve word
problems involving addition and subtraction of time intervals in minutes, e.g.,
by representing the problem on a number line diagram.
3.md.2 : Measure and
estimate liquid volumes and masses of objects using standard units of grams
(g], kilograms (kg], and liters (l). Add, subtract, multiply, or divide to
solve one-step word problems involving masses or volumes that are given in the
same units, e.g., by using drawings (such as a beaker with a measurement scale)
to represent the problem.
3.md.3 : Draw a scaled picture
graph and a scaled bar graph to represent a data set with several categories.
Solve one- and two-step ""how many more"" and
""how many less"" problems using information presented in
scaled bar graphs. For example, draw a bar graph in which each square in the
bar graph might represent 5 pets.
3.md.4 : Generate
measurement data by measuring lengths using rulers marked with halves and
fourths of an inch. Show the data by making a line plot, where the horizontal
scale is marked off in appropriate units-whole numbers, halves, or quarters.
In reading, Mrs. Davis' class has finished reading The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane and Mr. Seley's class is on the final chapters. Ask your child to give you a book review of the story and ask them to tell you what Edward taught them about love and life.
In writing, we have written friendly letters to incoming BCS students that will be mailed home to new students in the coming weeks. We are now beginning to write mixed-up fairy tales, reading fairy tales for inspiration and characteristics of the genre. Today, we did character sketches from any piece of literature for a pre-writing activity that we will continue tomorrow.
In social studies, we are completing our tour of the Northeast Region. The kids have learned to locate the states on a map! Mrs. Davis' graded quizzes are coming home tomorrow.
Friday is a half day for records day.
Have a great night!
Third graders played an online game called kahoot today to practice measurement. Here are our top five high scorers. Kids mark their answers on iPads.
